Greetings!
I am James V. Auste, a 30-year-old cancer survivor. Seven years ago, brain cancer threatened my life but thanks to the power of science and the miracle of faith, I am now healthy and free from the disease. The gift of a second chance at life inspired me to bring hope and courage to those still fighting cancer, particularly poor children.
As I found out more about this dreaded disease, I learned a very
troubling statistic. In developed countries, the survival rate of
children with cancer can go as high as 90%. But in the Philippines, children's survival is only at 30%, simply because many families cannot afford cancer treatment.
In 2000, a number of volunteers and I established the Cancer Warriors Foundation (CWF) in order to increase awareness on the prevention, early detection, proper care & treatment of cancer among Filipino children, as well as to raise funds for the cancer treatment of the almost eighty indigent children under our care.
Our maiden project in 2000 was Bike for Life, a journey of hope. The Bike for Life Team traveled from Manila to Cebu in two weeks covering 1000 kilometers and fifteen stops in Luzon and Visayas with the message Kayang Kalabanin ang Kanser Basta Makita ng Maaga at Magamot ng Tama (cancer can be defeated with early detection and proper care and treatment). Thousands of cyclists joined the Bike for Life Team and in every stop the team conducted a Cancer Awareness Seminar at the local school or plaza. In 2002, we repeated Bike for Life and brought
our message of hope to fourteen towns and cities in Northern Luzon.
The two journeys across the Philippines were successful in raising
awareness about cancer and our capability to FIGHT it together.
Now, the foundation is determined to reach out to our brothers and sisters in Visayas and Mindanao in order to share the same message of hope and life. We also intend to generate money for an Endowment Fund that will increase our capability to improve cancer care and treatment in the Philippines and to save even more kids who desperately need our help.
This coming September 2007, the Bike for Life Team, along with parents of cancer-stricken children will bike from Manila to Davao, over six (6) islands: Mindoro, Panay, Negros, Cebu, Bohol, and Mindanao. We will cover more than 1500 kilometers, and stop at at least 14 towns /cities to bring the message of hope and life for kids versus cancer until we reach Davao City in two grueling weeks.
In this light, we invite you to join us on the journey by partnering
with us to make the ride possible. Together, we can raise awareness for cancer as well as much-needed funds for poor and disadvantaged children who otherwise would not receive adequate cancer treatment or support. There are various sponsorship packages available, but any form of support will be appreciated.
With your help, we can give them a better chance of fighting and
surviving cancer ---- and the most precious gift of all -- LIFE!
Sincerely,
Gamaliel James V. Auste
